Soft Cut-out Sugar Cookies With Cream Cheese Frosting

The dough for these Frosted Sugar Cookies doesn't need to be chilled before it's made. This cookie is great for any holiday!

FOR THE CUT-OUT SUGAR COOKIES: – 3 cups (375 grams) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled) – 2 teaspoons baking powder – ½ teaspoon salt – 1 cup (190 grams) vegetable shortening – 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar – 1 large egg , room temperature – 2 tablespoons (30ml) milk – 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract FOR THE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: – 1 (8-ounce) package brick-style cream cheese , softened to room temperature – ½ cup (95 grams) vegetable shortening – 2 cups (240 grams) powdered sugar – 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract – 1-2 drops food dye

Heat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Put two large baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats aside. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.

Cream shortening and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer. Fully combine egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.

Cut dough in half. Roll each half to ¼-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface for crisp cookies or ⅜-inch thickness for softer cookies. 2-3-inch cookie cutters. Set 2" apart on baking sheet.

 Scrap sugar cookie dough makes more cookies. Bake cookies in batches at 350° for 8–13 minutes until set and lightly browned. Dough thickness and cookie cutter size determine baking time.

Cool 5–10 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack. Mix cream cheese and shortening, then add powdered sugar and vanilla. Frost or sprinkle sugar cookies after cooling.
