Care and Cleaning of Pearls
Proper care of your pearls will ensure longevity and a lasting beauty to be shared for generations to come.
-
Cosmetics like perfume, makeup, and hairspray contain chemicals that can eat away at cultured pearl's nacre, dulling it forever. Its okay to wear your pearls while you use these products, but you should put your pearls on after applying everything else to avoid damage.
-
You should avoid wearing your pearls while using cleaning products, which are hazardous to pearl jewelry. Many cleansers and detergents contain chemicals like ammonia and chlorine, which can quickly damage your pearls. Chlorinated pool water as well as yard work should be avoided when wearing your pearls.
-
Using a toothbrush and soapy water may work for cleaning your diamonds and some colored stone, but this process can scratch your pearls. Instead, wipe the pearls gently with a soft cloth dampened with water, but use no soap or detergent. Lay them on a towel to dry. Wet string can stretch and attract dirt, so don't touch a strand of pearls until it's completely dry.
